چکیده

A long landing is one type of flight incident that will multiply the risk of a runway excursion. It occurs frequently but receives little attention in research due to difficulty in obtaining the real flight data. The aim of this paper is to discover key flight parameter features of long landing incidents by analyzing Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data and put forward prevention measures from the perspective of pilot operation at the same time. First, 73 flight performance parameter variables and 4 operation parameter variables were defined, covering major landing stages from 1500 ft to touchdown. Then 128 cases of selected QAR data were divided into two groups according to the threshold of identifying normal and long landing. Second, each flight parameter variable of these 128 flights was compared between groups and then the logistic and linear regression models were developed respectively to further examine the links between touchdown distance and these flight parameter variables. Third, potential flight operation causing performance difference of long landing incidents was also analyzed. Finally results indicate that the period of 200 ft to touchdown is the key stage of landing and flare is the most critical operation affecting touchdown distance. It is suggested that the pilot should inspect the ratio of descent rate and groundspeed carefully at the height of 50 ft and pilot's faster and steady pulling up columns is probably helpful for an excellent flare and landing. The findings are expected to be applied into flight operation practice for further preventing long landing incidents and even the runway excursion accidents. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Reprint 770 Comparison of Turbulence Intensity Computed From LIDAR and Aircraft Data

The glide-path scans of the LIDARs at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) are used to calculate the eddy dissipation rate (EDR), the internationally adopted metric for turbulence reporting/alerting, by using the structure function approach based on the radial velocity data. The EDR so determined is compared with the turbulence intensity calculated from the Quick Access Recorder (QAR) dat...

Abnormality Detection in a Landing Operation Using Hidden Markov Model

The air transport industry is seeking to manage risks in air travels. Its main objective is to detect abnormal behaviors in various flight conditions. The current methods have some limitations and are based on studying the risks and measuring the effective parameters. These parameters do not remove the dependency of a flight process on the time and human decisions. In this paper, we used an HMM...

Examination of excessive fuel consumption for transport jet aircraft based on fuzzy-logic models of flight data

Because the amount of fuel usage is huge, and exhaust emissions of commercial transports is regulated under the Kyoto Protocol, how to reduce fuel consumption is an urgent problem for all airlines. The airlines urgently need a practical method to reduce fuel consumptions within constraints to accomplish the mission. The objective for the present paper is to use a model-based method and flight d...

Epidemiology of Medical Events on a Commercial African National Airline Carrier Between 2009 and 2011

Introduction: An estimated 3.8 billion passengers traveled on commercial aircraft in 2016, of whom close to 1.5 billion crossed international boundaries. Modern commercial aircrafts can carry up to 800 passengers and can fly more than 18 hours. Although not very common, in-flight medical incidents can result in flight diversions that are costly and extremely inconvenient. The a...

Simulation Modeling and Analysis of In-Flight Service Operations for Commercial Passenger Flights

Nowadays, in-flight comfort has become an essential characteristic to survive in domestic airline businesses. Air hostesses’ quality of service and response time to customer demand plays a vital role in enhancing quality of the flight experience and passenger satisfaction. However, additional requirements on air hostess expose them to fatigue which could eventually result in job dissatisfac...
